Mario Bonello did Malta proud today after winning the 100m race in the 30-35 age-group at the European Masters Athletics Championships in Hungary.

The experienced athlete didn't start well but hit his stride to seal victory in 11.08 seconds, finishing well clear of the other competitors in the final.

Spain's Carlos Herrera and Matthias Rotzler, of Germany, were second and third respectively.

Last year, Bonello also made his mark on the World Masters Championships, capturing a gold medal in the 200m and silver in the 100m in Finland.

Alan Zammit was the other Maltese athlete who participated in the Euro Masters Championships. On Friday, he finished fourth in his 100m heat (50-55 years) but just failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Zammit was classified 17th out of 37 runners, missing the cut by just one place.
