When the call for tenders expired on Tuesday, there was only one tender to be opened, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech announced in Parliament on Wednesday.

He said this off the cuff when he answered a parliamentary question by Evarist Bartolo (PL). The printed answer to the question, which had been approved before Tuesday, said the tendering period was still to close.

Mr Bartolo had asked if any of the companies showing an interest in the laying of the interconnector between Sicily and Malta had declared having been involved in cases of corruption, bribery, money laundering or grave professional misconduct.

Answering another question by Leo Brincat (PL), minister Fenech said the joint feasibility study carried out by Enemalta Corporation and Terna, the Italian energy provider, had been based on an interconnector of 2x200MW.

The tender that had just been closed was for one of those two cables.
