Spurs earn Champions League place

Hammers survive the drop

Two London clubs, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham, experienced mixed fortunes in the English Premier League last season.

While the Spurs rewrote their history books after gaining the fourth and final berth in the Champions League this season, the Hammers finished a place above the drop zone even if they had a cushion of five points on the nearest rivals.

The dismissal of Gianfranco Zola by the West Ham board did not go down well with most of the fans who backed the Italian to stay another season at the helm of the team.

Harry Redknapp, voted manager of the season, finally led Spurs to the Holy Grail as Tottenham cemented fourth place with a 1-0 win at Manchester City in their penultimate match of the season.

Since the turn of the century, Tottenham have had seven different managers. Now, they must show a level of consistency to keep the momentum going.

When Redknapp took over at White Hart Lane, Tottenham only had two points to show from eight games after the team had made its worst start to a Premier League campaign under Spanish manager Juande Ramos.

However, he managed to steer the Londoners to a League Cup quarter-final, the FA Cup semi-finals and qualification to the 'Big One' in Europe.

Since the restructuring of the league in 1992-93, West Ham have only been out of the Premier League on three occasions and failed to bounce back at the first time once.

Their performances away from home became their downfall as they only won once on their travels.

Scott Parker, who wished he had scored more than one goal, was voted the club's player of the year by the fans. Ironically, it was Parker's sole netting at Wigan that sealed the Hammers' status in the Premier League.

West Ham lost at Bolton 1-3 in the League Cup third round. Their FA Cup excursion was even worse as they fell at the first hurdle, 1-2 at Arsenal.

In the League Cup, Tottenham scored 12 goals in their first three outings but then met their Waterloo, going down to Manchester United 0-2 at Old Trafford.

In the FA Cup, Tottenham went further by reaching the last four.

Spurs, however, were on the receiving end of the shock of the season as they lost to Portsmouth 0-2 in extra time at Wembley.
