The planning authority yesterday gave its go-ahead for the complete restoration of the 19th century Fort Cambridge in Qui-Si-Sana, in Sliema.
The works will cover the underground tunnels, bastions and ditch as well as the main fort structure, underground levels and roof.
The full development permit forms part of the Fort Cambridge development project, which includes six blocks with 341 apartments and four levels of underground parking.
The area, covering about 17,000 square metres, has been subject to several alterations over the years including recent permits to demolish structures built over these last decades such as a lido and swimming pool.
The fort is one of the last remaining of the 19th century situated on the Tigné Point peninsula, which incorporates several military fortifications dating to the late period of the Knights, the British and the French. Fort Cambridge was specifically built to accommodate one of only three 100-tonne guns produced by the British army.
