The results obtained by students who sat for advanced and intermediate matriculation examinations compared well to those obtained in previous years and these were expected to further improve in the coming weeks, following the resits, the Educaton Ministry said.

It said in a statement that 76.7 per cent of candidates passed the examinations obtained between A and E.

However, for one to enter university the average obtained in all of the examinations was taken to see whether the required level for the course to be taken was reached.

A total of 10,289 examinations in 29 subjects ranging from languages to mathematics, sciences, economics, information technology and arts were taken at intermediate level.

The most popular subject was the systems of knowledge, which 2,425 students sat for with 81.9 per cent obtaining a pass mark and 52 per cent getting between A and C. A total of 1,624 students sat for English with 75.1 per cent obtaining a pass mark and 42.7 per cent getting between A and C.

Other popular subjects at this level were physics, with 53.2 per cent obtaining between A and C, philosophy (51.7 per cent), Maltese (49.7 per cent), Italian 60.4 per cent), accounts (51 per cent), marketing (59.5 per cent), biology (56.5 per cent), environmental science (43.7 per cent), religion (47 per cent) and information technology (68.2 per cent).

A total of 6,473 examinations in 29 subjects were held at advanced matriculation level.

The best results obtained with A to C grades were in Maltese (66.2 per cent), French (50 per cent), Italian (50.8 per cent), economics (55.2 per cent) marketing (59.2 per cent), geography (60.7 per cent), information technology (61 per cent), home economics (66.1 per cent).

A total of 38.4 per cent obtained between A and C in English with 72.6 per cent obtaining between A and E.

In mathematics, 37.9 per cent obtained between A and C while 58.2 per cent got between A u E.
