There is a great possibility that Maltese wrestlers will compete in five different international events this year.

This month, Abraham Vassallo, Malta’s top wrestler, and David Zammit will be taking part in the Great Britain Cup in Sheffield, England.

In August, Vassallo is scheduled to represent Malta in the Military Wrestling Championships in Finland. The following month, Vassallo will travel to Moscow to compete in the 2010 World Wrestling Championships.

As in previous years, Maltese wrestlers have entered the Grand Prix Sicilia, to be held in September. This year, the Sicilian tournament will run concurrently with the Wrestling Coppa Italia.

Vassallo is also expected to earn selection to the Maltese contingent for the Commonwealth Games in India next October.

The Maltese wrestlers are training under the guidance of national coach Jesmond Giordemaina.

In a statement, the Council of the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation reiterated its wish to organise a small-scale international tournament in Malta if funds were available.
