Abuagila Elwahishi, 33, had just arrived from Tripoli, Libya when a scan at the airport’s luggage control revealed a dark spot in his suitcase, which turned out to contain a packet of heroin hidden in a false bottom.

He was arrested and arraigned for conspiring to import the drug, importing it and being in its possession in circumstances which showed it was not for his personal use. In handing down judgment, Mr Justice Michael Mallia said that, should Mr Elwahishi not pay his fine within two weeks, he would be jailed for an additional 18 months.

He was also made to pay €1,487.99 in expenses.
