Lewis Hamilton is hoping McLaren crack the issues that blighted the team's British Grand Prix ahead of the next race in Germany.

On Friday evening at Silverstone, after a wretched day in practice, the team chose to abandon the big-money upgrade they had rushed to have on their cars for the race.

Hamilton was keen for the exhaust blown diffuser, a device rivals Red Bull have had on their cars since the start of the season, to remain.

However, McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh decided there were too many issues to be resolved for it to run effectively in qualifying and then the race.

So running with the old floor of their car, Hamilton and team-mate Jenson Button finished a creditable second and fourth, behind winner Mark Webber.

McLaren now have another nine days to perfect the system before the first practice session at another power track in Hockenheim that should again suit Red Bull.

"If we get our upgrade and it works we are going to be doing a mega job," said Hamilton.

"I didn't actually want to change the floor. I wanted to stay with it, but the team had to make a decision because it just wasn't delivering. I've no idea why.

"I am hoping they fix it and bring it, and I can go out there and use it to give me a much better fighting chance to get past these guys (Red Bull).

"Our race pace is almost as good. I hope once we get that diffuser it really is going to help us close that gap and we have a real race with them."

Even though Red Bull clearly have the fastest car, claiming nine poles this season from the 10 grands prix, it is McLaren who lead the way in the drivers' and constructors' championships.

Hamilton has a 12-point lead over Button and is 17 ahead of Webber, whilst McLaren are 29 points clear of Red Bull.
