Mepa has declared Wied il-Miżieb and Wied tax-Xaqrani near Mellieħa as scheduled properties in terms of the Planning Development Act.

The Authority said that that the area will be protected as follows: The entire property as an Area of High Landscape Value; Wied il-Miżieb and Wied tax-Xaqrani, and the Sandarac Gum Tree (Tetraclinis articulata) population, as a Level One (1) Area of Ecological Importance and Site of Scientific Importance; The escarpment as a Level Two Site of Scientific Importance (geomorphology), and the biotic communities as a Level 2 Area of Ecological Importance.

The lower reaches of Wied Sufa will be protected as a Level 2 Area of Ecological Importance and Site of Scientific Importance. The rest of the ridge has been classified as a Level 3 Site of Scientific Importance (geomorphology).

Wied il-Mizieb is on the opposite site of Mizieb, an area favoured by hunters, and the notice does not affect hunting, informed sources said.
