Transport Minister Austin Gatt has appointed George Said to lead an inquiry into the incident where a yacht and a boat collided off Tigne' earlier this week, causing the death of an 81-year-man who was in the boat.

The Transport Ministry said that Dr Said had also been requested to submit recommendations on the basis of the Merchant Shipping Act.

Earlier today, the police said that an autopsy performed yesterday showed that the elderly man had suffered asphyxia due to drowning.

The man fell into the sea as a result of the impact and was rescued by an AFM launch after assistance by the yacht. He was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital where efforts to save him failed.
