The indoor shooting ranges at Bidnija were the venue last weekend for the first air-rifle and air-pistol competitions to be held under new rules governing the 2010 Summer League.

The aim of the organisers is to help shooters stay in form and keep up with their training schedules ahead of their participation in the Welsh Airgun Championships in Cardiff next October.

In searing heat and high humidity, all competitors did well to produce their best performances and repeat the high scores they had registered in Sicily last month.

Lawrence Darmanin was making a comeback to the ranges after almost five months sidelined with injuries.

He showed no signs of rustiness though as he won the air-rifle event with a score of 548 points.

Darmanin was followed in second place by Michael Xuereb and Annabel Borg, both scoring 507 points. The former was declared runner-up on countback.

In the mixed air-pistol event, Ray Cacciattolo obtained the highest total of the afternoon to clinch first place with a score of 541 points.

He finished ahead of Eleanor Bezzina, 528 points, Martin Grech, 508, and Josette Calleja, 487.

The Summer League continues in two weeks' time with another shoot in Bidnija.
