No one was injured this evening when a fire broke out in the laundry of Mt Carmel Hospital in Attard - which also supplies linen to Mater Dei Hospital.

The blaze was reported at about 7 p.m. and smoke could be seen from a wide area. Four fire engines were deployed by the Civil Protection Department.

The hospital authorities quickly ascertained that no one was trapped inside.

Health Minister Joe Cassar and Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea were on site as firemen battled the blaze.

The commander of the Civil Protection Department, Patrick Murgo, who commanded the operation, said temperatures inside the building had exceeded 600 degrees and twisted the steelwork of the windows. Firemen and the police forensics team were still on the scene at 9 p.m.
