Five African migrants including two babies were drowned when their boat sank as they tried to reach the coast of southern Spain, the coastguard said yesterday. The small boat was spotted 80 kilometres south of Motril by a Salvamiento Maritimo plane on Saturday, but it began to sink before rescue service vessels could reach it, the coastguard said. Around 30 migrants, the majority from sub-Saharan Africa, were saved but two men, a woman and two babies were drowned, it said.

Spain is one of the major landing points for illegal immigrants to Europe from Africa.
