Policemen decorated for foiling HSBC hold-up
Two members of the Mobile Squad who foiled the recent hold-up at HSBC Centre in Qormi were decorated today in a ceremony held to mark Police Day. Certificates were also handed to other policemen for outstanding service.
The two Mobile Square officers, who were involved in a shoot-out with the robbers, received a certificate of merit and seven days off duty as well as a gold lapel pin which is awarded only for acts of bravery.
Two of the men who allegedly took part in the hold-up were arraigned last week. One of them was injured in the shoot-out.
During today's ceremony, a number of other officers received certificates of merit and long-service medals.
CERTIFICATES OF COMMENDATION
Certificates of commendation were awarded to:
An off-duty constable who on September 20 managed to arrest a person who had just committed a burglary;
An off-duty constable who on December 3 raised the alarm and was involved in the arrest of two persons involved in illegal hunting;
An off-duty constable who on February 5 raised the alarm leading to the arrest of a man who was driving a stolen vehicle and was in possession of a firearm;
An off-duty constable who on January 8 raised the alarm and gave assistance when fire broke out in a shop;
A sergeant for his successful participation in Frontex projects;
An off-duty constable who on April 10 arrested a man who was driving a stolen vehicle;
A constable who on March 4 while on duty at Zabbar police station, managed to convince a person not to commit suicide;
An off-duty constable who on April 8 managed to arrest a person who had escaped police custody after stealing from a shop in San Gwann;
A sergeant and two constables who on December 3, 2002 in Luqa managed to neutralise a Libyan man armed with a knife who had been holding a Maltese as hostage and was threatening murder;
Two constables who risked their life on December 20, 2008 when the managed to arrest a person who had been firing at the Mqabba PN club.
