The UHM said today that the government's Vision 2015 was strong on economics but lacking on the social aspect.
General Secretary Gejtu Vella said that the UHM was therefore launching the 2015 People's Social Vision, a project led by Fr Peter Serracino Inglott which would complement the government's vision.
The government's Vision 2015 focuses on ICT, tourism, manufacturing, health, education and health and Gozo as an eco-island
Mr Vella told a press conference that the union had identified six themes for its project - the IT revolution, health, the family, education, better quality of life and institutional and democratic structures in the country.
Asked about divorce in the context of the project theme on the family, Mr Vella said the union had no position on divorce, but it felt that initially, measures have to be taken to strengthen the family, with other measures following if people continued to face difficulty.
On health, he said that services at Mater Dei and the community sector needed to continue to be improved. As for education, Mr Vella said the country needed to place stronger emphasis on lifelong learning because knowledge was growing rapidly and no one could be satisfied with what he learnt only in his youth.
On quality of life, he said that it was important that the principles of social justice 'reigned' in the country. It was not enough to have laws but assistance needed to be given according to the different needs of the people.
