Polanski freed, escapes extradition to the US
Switzerland today rejected a US request to extradite film director Roman Polanski on a charge of having sex in 1977 with a 13-year-old girl.
The Justice Ministry said that national interests were taken into consideration in the decision, and that Polanski was now a free man.
The Swiss mostly blamed US authorities for failing to provide confidential testimony about Polanski's sentencing procedure in 1977-1978.
"The 76-year-old French-Polish film director Roman Polanski will not be extradited to the USA," the ministry said.
"The freedom-restricting measures against him have been revoked."
It was unclear if Polanski had already left his Swiss chalet in the resort of Gstaad, where he has been held under house arrest since December.
Switzerland's top justice official said Polanski could now leave.
"Mr Polanski can now move freely. Since 12.30 today he's a free man," Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf declared.
Approving extradition had seemed the likeliest scenario after Polanski was arrested on September 26 as he arrived in Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award from a film festival. Polanski had also suffered a series of legal setbacks this year in California courts.

History shows that the vast majority of priests who had sexually abused children went without being prosecuted, and to add insult to injury, in most cases, they were transferred away from the inquisitive eyes of parishioners to start anew in a different diocese and parish, performing the same monstrous acts that they had engaged in before. The church was thinking that out of sight out of mind was a great credo! Why do we draw parallels between Roman Polanski and Catholic priests who have molested children, I ask? What difference does it make as to who performs the unspeakable and deplorable act of sexually abusing and molesting a minor or a child as the case may be? There should be no statute of limitations and anyone tried and convicted of such a horrible criminal act should be sent to prison to rot. The last I knew, short of castration, child molesters no not rehabilitate and always end up being repeat offenders and a horrible menace to society!

Elitism. It revolves around glamour, the arts, the finesse of acting and the joys and pleasures of money and eternal greatness. Some people hide behind charisma. And yet we go to the theatre and cinemas to watch acting in grand style, we pay for it, we give prestigious awards to the finest and make them the allmighty gods of our own love for the pure truth.
Some people are still hunted down eventhough 70 odd years have passed since then. What an honourable man of great character this Roman Polanski is !!

I don't know why you are saying this because very few priests get jailed for abusing minors....and I mean minors not teenagers who dress like models....poor little ones most often of the same sex. I wonder who are the elite!

Had this paedophile been a priest all hell would break loose, but since he is a member of that select and elite group who are generally referred to as artists, he seems to be entitled to do as he pleases. Such are the strange ways of the world.
