Tamara Vella was the toast of the Maltese contingent yesterday after winning two medals at the FISEC Games, currently being held in Tours, France.

The young Maltese athlete placed first in the triple jump when she leapt 11.68 metres - a new junior national record.

Vella then attained another podium finish in the jump events when placing third in the long jump with 5.29 metres.

Thomas Farrugia took silver in the 200 metres in 23.17 seconds, a new junior national mark.

The other medal for Malta yesterday was won by Maria Sciberras who took bronze in the 300m hurdles after clocking 45.23 seconds.

Christian Luke Chetcuti just missed out on a place on the podium when he finished fourth in the 1,500m race.

Bertrand Sant and Farrugia qualified for the final of the 400 metres. Farrugia clocked 51.62 seconds to set a new junior national record.

Meanwhile, the girls basketball team suffered their third consecutive defeat yesterday at the hands of Portugal, 61-39 the final score.
