Olympic hero Fraser returns positive test

Reigning Olympic and World 100 metre champion Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica returned a positive test at May's IAAF Diamond League meeting in Shanghai.

News of Fraser's positive findings became public yesterday when Bruce James, president of Fraser's track club, released the information.

James described the positive test as "nothing serious".

"The positive finding is not a performance-enhancing drug or a masking agent and therefore we want to have this matter resolved as fast as possible," James added.

James said Fraser had dental work done in Jamaica in May, but was in pain leading into the meet.

He said the pain got worse which prompted her to consult the meet doctors in Shanghai, who gave her medication.

"The medication did not ease the pain and she sought out additional medication which reduced the pain enough to make her take to the track," he explained.

Fraser told AFP at last weekend's Prefontaine Classic meet that athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs are looking for an easy ride rather than training hard and paying their dues honestly.

"It comes down to greed and your dignity. Because eventually you are going to get caught," Fraser said.

"I waited my turn. I went to the 2007 world championships as a reserve for the relay team and I saw how hard the other athletes were working. I decided to work that much harder. I knew my time would happen eventually."
