It's not about the drivers, it's not about the pedestrians - it's about the traffic culture in this land!

I have been reading your readers' comments and I must say that we cannot neglect the fact that pedestrians can be negligent too. I happened to be on the spot when this accident happened and believe me that all involved could be victims in such situations and hasty comments should not be done by people that don't know the facts. I sincerely wish that all those involved will make a speedy recovery and be more carefull next time when we're pedestrains too!!!!!

Yet another accident! Someone somewhere has to start doing something, please get traffic police or something. Guess unless someone does do something we'll keep reading about it. I wish him well.

Before blaming the driver as none of you where there during the accident, see a court ruling on a similar accident in the same road as reported on this web site.
Many pedestrians cause accidents and at times, they are also injured. Pity the drivers who are accused of seriously injuring the pedestrians just because the pedestrian needed medical attention.
The law should be changed to treat the driver and the pedestrian with equal blame until a court verdict is issued. Maybe more knowledge of the tort law is needed.

PLEASE NOTE - WE NEED PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS. I live next to portico (KPMG) and to cross the road and enjoy the marina I have to walk either up to SA MAISON (700 meters circa) or down to Msida Marina next to Asian Living (700 meters circa). Gzira triq ix xatt has crossings every 100 meters or so. So do ghar id-dud in Sliema or Xatt at Marsaskala.

With reference to what you said earlier, I agree with you. I happened to be on the spot when this accident happened and it is very unfair to pass a judgement on drivers, as pedestrians can be negligent too!!!! And it is even more unfair that only the pedestrian is considered as a victim and the driver is completely neglected!!! Pedestrains should be educated too and stop pointing fingers as if only the drivers are guilty for such accidents.

That Portico Building has more obstructions coming out of it than any where else in Msida. I'm a Learner Driver, and I always find myself challenged by that stupid building, if it's not a Truck unloading, Blocking the Slow Lane, its a Garbage Truck. Drivers who go into the Fast Lane never slow down, and it's normally chaos all around.

If this is the same accident i encountered while on my way home from work, then the pedestrian could have easily used the subway/zebra crossing just up (few meters). most people would rather cross the road negligently than wait and I feel this is immensely helped by the "blame the driver" culture we adopt. I wont blame the pedestrians fully as there is absolutely no awareness about this. People are led to believe that speed is the one and only factor that kills people on the roads, which is a pathetic mentality at best. poor road design doesn't help either. if anything jaywalking should be fined as harshly as any serious traffic infringements.

I see a lot of overtaking on the inside on this road (it's two lanes each way), and also men and women drivers chatting on their mobile etc.
Until Malta has proper enforcement of traffic laws, driving tests etc., it will only get worse.
The only answer is to drive defensibly, but that does not stop the 'nutters' or those not paying attention or talking on their mobiles, from crashing into you.

Mr Oatman, true you see a lot of drivers overtaking on the inside lane, not just on this road but all over the island , Why? cause the traffic police are not there to educate and enforce the rule that you do not crawl on the outside lane, but stand near traffic lights in the hope that some idiot keeps going on orange , when we have it literally from the horses mouth that once you are driving and commited at a speed you do not brake for orange but keep going.

Any qualified driver knows that it is perfectly legal to pass on the inside on a two-lane highway.

Yes unfortunately we need immediate action from the authorities. It doesn't matter who's in fault, one thing is for sure. We need IMMEDIATE ACTION. We need heavy education, including heavy fines and persistent patrolling. This is not an anarchic country. So no one should be allowed to do whatever he likes. I beg the authorities to start immediate action. It's obvious that someone needs to do something right away. So we can abide by the rules but what about those who don't????? It's obvious that people in MALTA and not just where driving is concerned tend to want to rule the island. Come on move it.

These incidents happen everyday. It's the media that is now "all of a sudden" reporting every single traffic accident. No matter how trivial the incident is. The media can kill a nation when it manipulates news coverage.

Actually the media is being quite restrained in only reporting the more serious accidents as according to the quarterly reports that are made public, there are on average between 35 to 40 "reported" traffic accidents each and every day on our tiny Island.

It is unfortunate to read of the increase in traffic accidents. However, I must say that I am not surprised. During my driving trips I seem to be coming across more haphazard, aggressive and selfish driving. The level of safe driving is taking a nose dive. Stricter control was exercised when traffic policemen were patrolling our highways - much better than ramps (sleeping policemen, just the word) cameras and other static deterrents that seem to be cropping up from day to day.

I definitely agree.
Nowadays you see no policemen on the road. Only traffic wardens hiding behind bushes, catching drivers only AFTER the offence is committed.
