At least one Maltese football player was arrested in Sweden for assaulting a referee during a game against Norwegian rivals.

Norwegian and Swedish newspapers have reported that the under 15-football team were kicked off a football ground in Östersund following a brawl. The Maltese, who were competing in the youth cup challenge Storsjöcupen, lost 1-0.

It was reported that a police patrol had to be summoned to the stadium as the fight broke just before the final whistle.

As the final whistle was blown, several people rushed into the field and attacked the referee. It took about half an hour for the fight to subside.

The newspapers reported that at least one player has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

IAccording to the foreign newspapers the team is from the Ilves Football School of Mosta.
