The Maltese swimmers at the 62nd FISEC Games in Tours, France, yesterday ended the day with a bountiful harvest of medals and significant results.

In all, Gail Rizzo's team scooped nine medals in individual events and two in relays.

Rhea Cutajar was the winner of the 100m butterfly event and Talisa Pace (200 free), Mark Sammut (200m free and 100m back), Michaela Millo (200m breast) and Daniel Galea (50m breast) were second in their races.

Galea added a bronze medal in the 200m breast and Nicola Muscat (50m free) and Matthew Zammit (50m free) also finished third.

The girls relay team (Muscat, Cutajar, Pace, Shanice Cassar) were third in the 4x100 race and the boys quartet (Gabriel Pace, Jeffrey Galea, Daniel Galea and Sammut) were also bronze medal winners in the 4x200m relay.

Also in swimming, the upcoming Amy Micallef did well enough in the 50m breaststroke to establish a new age group record. She swam the distance in 37.73.

Other age group records were set by Zammit (100m fly - 1:03.59) and Sammut (100m back - 1:02.57).

In track and field various Maltese athletes reached the final stages in different events yesterday.

However, the best result was obtained by Jeremy Borg. He won the boys' long jump with a leap of 6.77m.

The girls' basketball team got their group matches going yesterday with a 64-45 upset to Spain 'A'.

For Malta, Steffi Demartino was the best scorer with 26 points.
