Nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando's Private Member's Bill has rekindled the debate on divorce. Juan Ameen takes to the streets of Valletta to see what people think.

Carmel Curmi, Valletta
I don't know why he did it. I'm against divorce. What will happen is out of my control. I don't agree with it. I'm 79 and I've been married to the same woman for 52 years. I like a lot of other women but I only have one wife.

Evelyn Vella Clark, Żabbar
I don't know if he had the right to do or say something without agreeing with his colleagues but I disagree with what he did. I hope to God whoever is leading the country remains sensible like he is now so that this cursed divorce never comes to Malta. So many people want it because they want to be comfortable. But I disagree with divorce completely. What he (Dr Pullicino Orlando) did is on his conscience. I don't agree with divorce as we are Catholics and I hope Malta always remains Roman Catholic. These things, such as divorce and euthanasia, should never come to Malta as they will bring a curse.

Jonathan Camilleri, Valletta
I don't agree with divorce, especially in the light of our country and our religion. I also don't agree with his decision to introduce the Bill in Parliament.

Cocy Vella Clark, Msida
I believe in a Christian marriage and my parents brought me up and taught me these values. I was and will still remain a Christian. Thank God I've been married for 39 years and we'll celebrate our anniversary this week. We had our ups and downs; what more can happen to you after your only daughter dies? I hope Malta remains Catholic forever.

Brooke Bartolo, Fgura
I really agree with divorce. I can't wait for it to be introduced in Malta. I will be the first one to take it. I really agree with his decision. There are many people who need it, like my mother. You want to start your life again from scratch.

Tanya Camilleri, Valletta
I never used to agree. I'm not saying they should introduce it but there are certain cases that require consideration. I know divorce is never good but there are certain cases that are heart-breaking and perhaps the government should think about it.

Jane Spiteri, Żejtun
I agree divorce should be introduced as you have the right to live your life freely. You could be beaten by your husband or he is cruel and people should have a right to start all over.

Jason Ghigo, Senglea
It depends from which angle you take it. A divorce law for those who have been waiting for years might help to speed up the process but there are people who will abuse the situation. It's like buying a chocolate and throwing it away when you've had enough. I don't agree with that. If the process is taken forward I agree. I'm not saying I agree with introducing divorce as such but one has to be 100 per cent sure of what they are doing. Dr Pullicino Orlando is an MP and I'm sure he knows what he is doing.

Josef Briffa, Mtarfa
I don't agree that divorce should be introduced. I don't agree with it as I think it won't be accepted by the Maltese, even though there are people who might need it.

Paul Darmanin, Tarxien
Personally, I don't agree with divorce as values come before politics but I can't impose what I believe in on other people. Discussion is good but I hope all the MPs act according to their moral beliefs as they are accountable to the people. If people still have values then they have to keep this in mind.
