Jeffrey Camilleri, a Zurrieq football club player, was today acquitted due to lack of evidence, of trying to bribe Sta Lucija player Brian Chetcuti in May last year.

Mr Camilleri had been accused of trying to bribe the rival player during a match between their two clubs, which Zurrieq won on penalties.

The court was told that Mr Camilleri had offered Mr Chetcuti €1,000 if he caused a penalty. The attempt was made near the end of normal time.

Mr Chetcuti had reported the case after the game.

Mr Camilleri had pleaded not guilty and Magistrate Anthony Vella acquitted him for lack of evidence.
