Borg completes season on top note

The golf season has come to an end and a new captain, Kenneth Micallef, was elected at the recent annual general meeting.

The season always wraps up with the Club Championship, this year sponsored by IIG Bank.

The competition was inaugurated in 1963 and the trophy was presented to the club by Rear Admiral David Boyle.

If last year saw some outstanding performances, this year those results were eclipsed.

Over three days, Andy Borg was never seriously threatened, his scores being 69, 65 and 67 for a total of 201.

Borg eventually emerged winner followed by J.J. Micallef (217) and Peter Satariano (220).

After Day One, the challengers were Satariano (71), Vella (73), Danny Holland (74) and Micallef (75). Holland, who is still a junior, would have improved his position if he hadn't recorded a disappointing nine shots at the sixth hole.

It was universally agreed that the course was in superb condition.

Running alongside the championship was the Centenary Plate which is designed as a full handicap stroke play for those lesser players with higher handicaps.

As the championship restricts the number of players to 27 on Day Two and 20 on Day Three, those who dropped out joined the Centenary Plate, thus maintaining interest until the end.

Consequently, the likes of William Beck and Ian Macpherson competed in the Centenary Plate. Domenique Lang won it with a net 201 followed by three players with precisely the same score of 205 - Busuttil, Khacturov and Beck.

Busuttil's best score on the last day earned him second place.

The Order of Merit, sponsored by Lacoste, also come to an end.

This is the accumulation of achievement points for every competition played. Holland was the winner followed by Borg.

The Eclectic - the total of the best score on each hole throughout the year - was also completed.

Borg had the best total followed by Paul Stoner.
