Ambassador John Paul Grech is to be appointed Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, succeeding Cecilia Attard-Pirotta, who will be taking up the post of Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean in the coming weeks, the ministry said.

Dr. Grech is a career diplomatic officer who has just served as ambassador to Germany. During his term in Berlin, Dr Grech was also non-resident ambassador to Poland.

Previously, Ambassador Grech was Malta's special envoy to the Arab League.

Dr. Grech read for a post-graduate in diplomatic studies at the University of Oxford, a Masters from the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies and has a PhD in International Relations.

He is married to Margot and has three sons, Jonathan, Nathaniel and Matthias.
