ETC steps up fight against irregular employment
The Employment and Training Corporation is stepping up efforts to curb irregular employment by recruiting inspectors to complement its Law Compliance Unit staff.
The inspectors will be monitoring cases where foreign nationals were issued with an employment licence by the ETC. This will be done to ensure the employer is abiding by the conditions of the licence.
Foreigners can only work in a particular occupation after they are issued with the licence. Similarly, employers must have an employment licence for any foreigner/s working for them.
The ETC said it was illegal for employers to assign additional tasks to foreign employees that were outside the remit of the licence issued. Any discrepancies would be reported to the police and appropriate legal action taken.

Always the same story and the same hopeless solution. Recruiting additional inspectors will not solve the problem of rampant irregular employment. What is needed is a serious and determined team to enforce the law. Once the employers know that the ETC this time mean business there is no need for this additional expenses. This policy of additional personnel has not yielded any results this time. What is needed more discipline on inspectors to do their job properly.

How about surprise visits to restaurants and places of entertainment? I guarantee that the ETC will have a field day.

Recently www.timesofmalta.com reported an official saying that about 20 foreigners, caught working illegally, are deported every month. This number is obviously well below the number of illegally working illegal immigrants in Malta, as anyone with eyes to see can tell by walking the streets of our towns and villages. ETC's new determination to catch illegally working aliens should be complemented by a policy to repatriate those caught to their native countries.
