The first night shelter for the elderly - a joint venture between the government and the Church - is expected to have a soft opening by the end of this month.
The shelter has been set up in a refurbished section of Jesus of Nazareth Institute in Zejtun. It has facilities for eight elderly people including bedrooms and bathrooms.
An open day was held today, with Parliamentary Secretary Mario Galea and the nuns who run the institute welcoming people who wished to learn more about the experiment.
Mr Galea said that if this night shelter proved successful, others would be opened in various localities. He explained that many elderly people applied to live in homes for the elderly mostly because they did not like being alone at home at night.
Having the night shelters would enable them to spent the night in a safe, comfortable environment, while they could continue to live in their communities.
The users of night shelters will be charged €2 per night and will be assisted by a carer.
The next night shelter is expected to open in Mellieha.
