The government has appointed a board of inquiry to 'establish the facts' after reports that documents belonging to the Office of the President had been circulated among journalists, President George Abela told a press conference this afternoon.

He did not give details about the documents in question, but also said that Olaf Terribile, secretary to the presidency was replaced as secretary of the presidency last month.

Dr Abela said that early last month he told the head of the Civil Service, Godwin Grima, that he no longer had confidence in Mr Terribile, and Mr Terribile was removed from the post on June 9.

Referring to media reports which had raised questions over spending by the Office on the refurbishment of Sir Anthony Mamo Room at San Anton Palace, Dr Abela said the refurbishment and the funds needed for the purpose were approved by the Ministry of Finance.

He said the furnishing was nothing out of the ordinary and the room had not been refurbished for 20 years.

Dr Abela said the only reason why two bills were not endorsed and signed by Mr Terribile - including a €12,600 direct order approved by the Finance Ministry - was because he was no longer in the post.

The Ministry of Finance, which had raised concerns, understood the position when it was explained to it, and there was therefore nothing out of the ordinary.

Dr Abela said that Joseph Church has been nominated to be appointed secretary to the presidency.

FORMER PSC HEAD TO LEAD INQUIRY

Meanwhile the government announced this evening that the inquiry announced by the President will be conducted by Alfred Fiorini Lowell.

Mr Fiorini Lowell retired last week after having served as chairman of the Public Service Commission. He is also a former Cabinet Secretary and Permanent Secretary.
