MUT registers industrial dispute with the government
The Malta Union of Teachers has registered an industrial dispute with the government as talks for a sectoral agreement for educational grades have failed, the union said.
It said in a statement that following a marathon of meetings, the government did not accept its request to address the anomalies which origianlly led the union to declare a dispute in 2007.
It said although the government did not want to budge from its position, it was still leaving the door open to dialogue.

@MBorg
I see you are one of those who still think that teachers enjoy three months 'holidays' in Summer. This year holidays fall between 12th July and 22nd September. I'll leave it up to you to work that out in the hope that you paid attention during your maths lessons!

Why split hairs ? Some schoold stop before the 12th July. but that is of no difference. 12th July or the 1st.July that is still much much longer than the winter leave you asked. for 28 days are much ,much less than what you get. Got it ? You forgot to mention that you have shorter hours throughout the year.

Reading your comments one wonders why you don't change jobs. You sound pretty clever so you won't find it that hard to qualify. I am asking you in all seriousness, apply for a teaching post and benefit from all the goodies. You know that I only asked for Winter leave as a hypotetical question in the event that the authorities concede to your plea and give teachers work during the Summer. Finally, Those who think that teachers are having it too good can solve this problem by keeping their children at home and educating them themselves. It sholdn't be that hard, I mean a teacher has to deal with 25 to 30 students all from different backgrounds and educational levels. Teaching your own children should be a breeze.

Is a short lesson in comprehension needed here ? Read my comment again " doing nothing" refers to what you would be doing during the summer months. Nothing insulting in that, just the plain truth. You get paid for doing nothing.

Was there anything in what I wrote that gave the impression that I do not know what a teacher's job entails ? You asked why you are not offered winter leave like other workers , but you forgot to add that other workers work up to 5-7pm to your 1pm-2pm. Your three months leave in summer more than make up for the 28 days leave these workers get.
If you really need three months holiday to prepare for the next scholastic year , present day teachers must be a very slow lot. No wonder schools are in such a bad shape.
Why don't you come clean and say that summer holidays for you are just that, summer hollidays, three months of doing nothing, that is unless you give private lessons.

Mut must be ashamed how she's treating the kindergarten assistants!! Some assts have been waiting more than a year to get their pay rise and they (MUT) just sit there doing nothing for them! What's the use paying your membership when u r not treated as your other colleagues!! Mr Bencini you should consider this situation as a high priority, some KA's r being ROBBED of their own wage when they r doing the same job as other KA's who finished their MCAST course!!

With all that we are going through it is about time that teachers start doing some kind of job in summer to make good for the pay they will be getting for doing nothing.

And what would you suggest? And will the teachers be offered leave like other workers during the Winter? perhaps then you will volunteer to stay in class with the students. And by the way teachers are not doing nothing during the loooooong 'holidays' they are preparing for the next scholastic year and many are involved in Summer schools. But you wouldn't know that would you? You would only become aware of a teacher's commitment by joining the teaching profession so I extend an invitation.

MR.Borg I do cordially invite you to "do nothing" at any school in Malta, and see how that feels. Just for one week. Then see how "doing nothing" feels and comment! If anyone needed an example of an insulting comment, yours is the best example!

Jien nahseb wasal iz-zmien li l-MUT tiddeciedi li tiehu azzjoni iebsa u mhux direttivi bla sens li ftit ihallu effett fuq l-awtoritajiet. Il-gvern ilu mill-2007 jghaddi z-zmien bina.

Isn't it strange that MP's never complain that they are not getting paid enough? Teachers spend 4-6 years intensive studying to get where they do, and yet they are treated so much like dirt when compared to other professionals. mind you, every job has its dignity and deserves better; i'm just making a comparison between jobs that are considered professional and require years of tertiary education....Gozitan teachers, for ex., don't even get compensated for the ferry!!

About time Dear MUT! What about the injustice that all Kindergarten Teachers (KG1) have been facing this past year? Are these results coming out? Are we going to get our deserved wage like our fellow kindergarten teachers who are in a better grade than us but did the same course? SHAME SHAME SHAME !

So now they have up to end September to settle this dispute. Let us hope that by then no industrial actions will be availed of.

@ David Gauci: It seems that it doesn't bother you in the least what the teachers' problem is ... that is, as long as your children are not hit by their industrial action. How's that for good citizenship, eh? What a bunch of nutty hypocrites and egoists we have in this country! NIMBYs indeed!
