Work that used to be done by 230 people is today being done by 40 in a more efficient manner at a profit and saving the government 4 million euros a year, Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi said this afternoon.

Speaking during a visit to Kols Ltd, a cooperate that offered a laundry service to all state hospitals in Malta and Gozo, as well as to some of the private ones, Dr Azzopardi said the cooperative had been operating successfully since 1999.

The cooperative, which also offered its services free of charge to the Dar tal-Providenza and Arka, had reduced its carbon footprint by 44 per cent through a 90,000 euro investment to modernise the boiler room. It had plans to continue reducing its carbon footprint through investment in solar panels.

The cooperative, which last year had a turnover of 2.988 million euros, handles 9,000 sheets a day.
