Recently I watched the rehearsals of the performance Ospizio which Theatre Anon has been commissioned to create by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts between July 5 and 14.
This is a site-specific performance in the dilapidated historical Ospizio grounds and buildings at Floriana that used to be a hospice for orphans, prostitutes and old and destitute people between the mid 18th century and the 19th century.
Since its setting up in 1994 by a group of talented young performers and theatre makers, Theatre Anon has become synonymous with good theatre and thought provoking action plays.
The members of this group all contribute directly to the creative process including composition, costume, set and light design, stage direction and physical work with the aim of ensuring that audiences enjoy a highly theatrical and entertaining experience.
Ospizio is a fascinating tale, a mix of the joyful and the sad - a spectacular, magical and hilarious, but also touching tale of deep, human and passionate sensitivity. It is a must-see for all those who love pure theatre and have Maltese talent at heart to appreciate and follow the performers as they create carnivals and move huge puppets in a production which encompasses dance, music and theatre under the moonlit skies of the pleasant July evenings.
