The Mepa Board this morning turned down an application for a development permit to convert the De Guiral Battery in Fort St. Angelo into a restaurant.
The application proposed restoration of the battery and its conversion into a restaurant as part of the Cottonera Waterfront Regeneration Project. The application was submitted by Cottonera Waterfront plc.
The De Guiral battery is an open sea-level battery on the edge of the southwest foreshore of Fort. St. Angelo. Of a roughly rectangular form, it is enclosed by two low walls at right angles to each other on the seaward side, and by the high walls of the Fort on the other two sides.
The Development Planning Directorate has recommended refusal of the application refusal because the proposed development would change the external and internal appearance of a Grade 1 listed building and it went beyond scientific restoration and rehabilitation.
