Isle of MTV - The highlights of a fantastic show
The series of four Isle of MTV free summer concerts at the Floriana Granaries ended with a bang yesterday as an eclectic mix of performers got an already energetic crowd going to the live version of tunes that have been hitting the airwaves.
Video above shows highlights of the concert, held in association with the Malta Tourism Authority. The show yesterday featured R&B singer-songwriter Kelis, followed by the "sexy" sounds of Scissor Sisters, the "real" music of Kid Rock and the cross-over hits of DJ-at-heart David Guetta.
Kelis, the Brit Award winner, was accompanied by her DJ symphony - rather than a standard band. She sang her Acapella, produced by David Guetta and termed the soundtrack to the summer, as well as some "fresh new tracks".
Scissor Sisters presented their mixture of glam rock, disco and alternative music to a heaving audience, performing tracks fresh from their recently released album Night Work, described by themselves as a "party record... a dance album".
Kid Rock, fresh from his "humbling" performance at London's O2 Arena as the special guest of Bon Jovi's The Circle Tour, seemed to have recharged his batteries during his stay in Malta since Sunday, putting up a spunky performance with his genre-spanning sound.
Top French DJ and producer David Guetta, who is familiar with Malta, having been here several times, continued to work the crowd, after hours of standing, with his big pop show, including Getting Over You and Love is Gone.
Fans were in for a treat when David Guetta was joined on stage by Chris Willis in a surprise appearance that had everyone partying.

I have not been to Malta in over 20 years.
My mom was born and raised in Malta before she moved to Canada.
I have to tell all the people who went to the show and had a good time regardless of who was performing and whether they knew the artists or not - GOOD FOR YOU FOR SUPPORTING EVENTS LIKE THIS!!
As with any event that has mass amounts of people and loud music, there will be some unhappy people.
But it is events like this that puts Malta on the map and in the press - even in North America - like when Lady Gaga was there last year. That is why Tourism Malta gets involved with events such as this, and by the sounds of it: mission accomplished.
Most of all - it was free. FREE! I am going to see Kid Rock (by himself - not 3 other acts) at the Calgary Stampede next week, and I had to dish out $100 (CDN) per ticket to see him perform live.
Also, I read a very good point: don't wear flip flops to an outdoor show and not expect it to hurt when you get stepped on.

Dear Markatia and other moaners alike,
I REALLY can't understand what are you trying to achieve when people like you start complaining. It almost sounds as if the sick and elderly are some kind of guarantee to halt any activity that is considered amusing. The truth is that EVEN if these activities would be cancelled the sick will not feel better and what has to happen will happen any ways (I know I am being crude but that's reality and it's pointless to run away from it)
I sympathize with the sick, elderly and their relatives but it does not make ANY sense that entertainment activities should be hindered simply because sick people might hear fireworks or music. Malta is small, VERY small so when a big event is organized it will effect some people whether it is done in Floriana or Ta' Qali doesn't make a difference.
It seems that the phrase 'Live and let Live' for some people is too hard to digest, I had relatives at Boffa and at Mater Dei in very grave conditions even deaths but I never felt I had the right to stop others from having fun, life goes on no matter what!

Concert was good, I really enjoyed it with good company.
I personally think performances and music was much better off last year. Black eyed peas and Lady Gaga are simply amazing not to leave out Enrique :) who can really set up a show ,animate people and produce good music...........What I simply could not stand is people pushing and acting stupid savaging around acting Maltese............Overall for Malta it was a great show especially for our tourism section which will boost up our popularity worldwide.
Business was good too in regards to food and beverages.I enjoyed my massive burger and Dark Dog:)Cant wait till next year for the last Isle of MTV.
Take care & keep in good health

Hadd ma ghandu l-pazjenti ta Boffa fi hsiebu ghax kullhadd qed jigi jitmejjel minn kulhadd f'dan il-pajjiz ghalekk mixjin il-quddiem. U minn jghid li ma nsemax sejjer zbaljat ghax ahna hemm konna fejn il-qraba taghna, fl-ahhar nifs. U ghall informazjoni ta kulhadd anki l-bombi ta kullimkien u dak kollu li johloq storbju zejjed huwa zejjed. imma fil-fehma tieghi jekk iridu jaljenaw in-nies misshom jaljenawhom ta qali fejn mhemx pazjienti mimlijin ugiegh u xejn aktar. Last night's line up was great, maybe I was lucky because I like all 3 performers and I think they gave an amazing show considering the below average sound system on the Granaries!
When I say line up I don't mean David Guetta and neither the dj's who were supposed to entertain the crowd for 30 minutes between performances.
If I wanted to hear Guetta (a personal favourite btw) I would go to one of his numerous performances he does every year in Malta.
His contribution to Isle of MTV was the bus loads of teenagers that came to the Granaries who made the crowd experience a living nightmare.......If you decided to move from your spot during an event like this DO NOT expect to come back and find your space again......If you want to drink beer buy it before and deal with the consequences...........and please do not shout 'Irridu l'Guetta' when there is an artist like Kid Rock playing LIVE on stage!
This is a good opportunity to market our lovely island and lucky to have it for 4 years running but we still have to learn a lot on how such big events need to be organised!

Ghal min qieghed igerger u jitkaza ghall-istorbju u l-hmieg: Jaqaw insew l-istorbju li jkun hemm tal-mass meetings li jsiru fuq il-fossos tal-furjana meta joqorbu l-elezzjonijiet? Tghid hadd minn dawn li qed igergu, ma mar jaqbez, jghajjat u jxejjer xi bandiera u maktur waqt il-mass meetings fuq il-fossos?
U minjaf x'jaghmlu dawn in-nies jekk ikunu qed jieklu u jixorbu go folla u fadlilhom il-borza tal-ikel jew il-flixkun tal-ilma? Tghid jitfghu kollox fil-but jew johorgu barra mill-folla biex isibu dustbin, imbghad forsi jergghu jidhlu gol-folla?!
U xi jghidu dwar il festi, dawn li qed igergru? Jaqaw il-festa tar-rahal taghhom taghmel murtali bla hsejjes? Jaqaw il-marci taghhom ikantawhom f’qalbhom meta jkunu fil-pjazza biex ma jdejqux lil ta’ madwarhom?
Tghid ikollhom lill-pazjenti tal-isptar Boffa fi hsibijiethom, dawk li jgawdu u jiccelebraw il-karnival fost l-istorbju li jkun hemm il-belt u l-furjana?
Naghder lin-nies morda jew ir-residenti ta’ dawn il-lokalitajiet. Li jdejquni huma dawn li jilghabuha tal-qaddisin mexjin fl-art. Kulhadd jiehu pacenzja bl-istorbju ta’ haddiehor xi darba jew ohra. Ghax jekk ma jkunx hemm xi kuncert ghaddej fit-triq tieghek, ikollok tissaporti l-istorbju tal-girien. Araw l-istampa kollha qabel ma tixghelu r-raggiera ta’ wara raskom u tikkummentaw!

In this case it is not a matter of Malktese gemgem. The proper place for these large crowds is Ta' Qali where there are no residents to disturb. I wonder if R Azzopardi and D. Caruana would have complained if these were held in their street! Ask the residents of Floriana to tell you what they have to go through.

Ara vera maltese gemgem at its very best ta. I never attended the Isle of MTV because I don't like the music. I'm a metalhead. But those who enjoy the music got one hell of a party and what's more, it was FREE! So please, stop whining.

It will be very interesting to carry out a poll from the residents of Floriana, especially those of the vicinity what they think of these types of concerts next to their doorstep. What is the local council of Floriana doing to protect them from the great hassle that the residents go through? Ta' Qali is the best place to have these kinds of concerts.

I attended, it was very good. Shame on the people who complain. If you didn't enjoy it, just don't comment and keep your opinion to yourself. At the concert I got annoyed at people who swear at you if you accidentally hit them or step on them. That's what you get when all those people are there, next time don't go with flip-flops.

I think it was one of the best MTVs ever. David Guetta was simply amazing. Ideally he would have played at least another 15mins...but nonetheless well done to the organisers and MTA. Hope there will be other concerts like these in the near future.

@R.Borg..... yes there was lots of rubbish this morning but by the time i got off work at 2:15 it had been cleaned up so stop whining. There is just as much rubbish at the village festa, the indepence celebrations, the papal visit!!
@Markita Bugeja.....what are you on about woman!! seriously????
I did not attend the Isle of MTV simply because it wasn't of interest to me but my god there are some spoil sports and whiners in this country. This is a once a year thing and this was it's last year here. The people complaining are probably a bunch or geriatrics with very ancient views on everything.
Lighten up....

Prosit lil Kunsill Lokali tal-Floriana tal-hmieg u skart li halla warajh dan il-kuncert. minghajr ma hadu hsieb inadfu mill-ewwel. imma l-klunsill jinteressah biss li l-hwienet tax-xorb jaghmlu l-flus. Il-fosos tal-Floriana mhux post adattat ghall dawn l-avvenimenti. Kemm ghar-residenti, traffiku, u storbju fil-vicinanzi ta' Sptar Boffa. Nispera li fil-Floriana dawn l-attivitajiet jispiccaw kemm dak ta zmien l-ewwel tas-sena u kif ukoll dawn tas-sajf. Il-kuncert tal-bierah kien wiehed li jattira certu tip ta' udjenza li il-fossos zgur mhux post adattat.

Prosit lilek Sur/Sinjura Calleja li ma ticcekkjax il-fatti qabel ma tikkumenta....
Ghidli ezattament fejn gie msemmi l-Kunsill tal-Furjana f'dan l -artiklu.... il-kuncert kif imsemmi hawn fuq gie organizzat mill-MTV flimkien mal-Malta Tourism Authority.
Il-Kunsill Lokali Floriana ma dahhalx penny minn dan l-avveniment... il-Malta Tourism Authority hadet iz-zona ta' madwar il-Fosos b'esklussivita'.... dan jigifieri li z-zona kollha taqa' taht idejhom f'dan l-avveniment.... ghalhekk kwalunkwe bar, stand tal-ikel, gabbana u kwalunkwe haga ohra li "taghmel il-flus" ma marrux fil-but tal-Kunsill.
Peress li r-responsabilta' kollha ta' din iz-zona kienet taqa' taht l-istess Awtorira b'mod esklussiv, It-tindif ukoll kien fir-responsabilta taghom kif ukoll iz-zarmar ecc ecc.
Kieku indenjajt ruhek iccempel lill-Kunsill probabli kienu jfehmuk, ghax waqt li haddiehor kien qed jiddeverti jew idahhal il-flus fil-but, il-Kunsill kien qed jiehu l-kolpa ingusta u jiehu lmenti ta' nies li bhalek ikunu minn tal-ewwel li jilmentaw u jippuntaw subajhom, izda minn tal-ahhar biex jiccekkjaw x'qeghdin ilabalbu.
Grazzi lill-MTA li ghal darb'ohra offriet dan l-avveniment tant kbir!

I was there between 1900 and 0030 .
I was not in front but in the mid section or the back .
The sound was ok although it missed the medium to high frequencies especially when J Joy was on stage .
Rather disappointing was David Guetta's very short performance compiling digital medleys of famous hits . At least there was Chris Willis how gave a live performance.
After hours of waiting to the point of becoming bored the crowd burst out as Guetta came on stage. It was nearly 00.15 .Pity it did not last longer.
David Guetta ended his performance after maybe 15minutes which were followed by
'We Want More' from those present and later with an outcry of Booing until he came out again on stage and spent another 7minutes mixing away .
Yes the Booing came from young people ....they were unsatisfied.
Personally the best was Kid Rock.
The crowd was expecting Guetta to deliver more but this did not happen.

I will never attend to this masacre. Masacre!?? Why??
Patients dying at Boffa Hospital weren't having fun yesterday. No body thinks for these people full of Pain and agony. And the goverment place such loud music so that he increases agony to our brothers and sisters. Masacre.... Injustice.
But most of Barons fully agree with these kinds of activities because the economical wheel of Lawyers will fully turn after these kinds of Masacres. Prosit Gonzi, qed timpressjona. Keep it Up, Zommha il-fuq. Mhux ahjar nonfqu il-liri ha jkollna servizz tas-sahha ahjar, milli sahha ghar, wara l-alcolhol li nxtorob il-bierah u sustanzi ohra....

I was present yesterday and have to say that i am quite disappointed. Sound was terrible - people could hardly hear vocals. For a concert in Malta, the line-up was average - i'm sure that more than 75% of the crowd didn't know most of the songs sang by kelis, scissor sisters and Kid rock! Each singer had one song that they are well known for in Malta.
Taking all into consideration:
Kelis was a disgrace - why bother showing up for a 15-20 minute performance? No stage presence and no interaction.
Scissor Sisters performed very well - though at some point, the sound system played up and you could only here the vibrations of the speakers. Overall, despite not knowing many of their songs, they gave a good performance.
Kid Rock was the best of the night - great performance, crowd interaction and overall show. I only knew one of his songs before the night, but even though i didnt know his others songs, still kept me interest.
Guetta - 30 mins?? You have got to be kidding! Why get him if he has been here countless times already, and is coming at the end of this summer too??
J Farrugia
Jul 1st 2010, 12:44
it's only you who was not satisfied because all those whom I have talked with run counter to your own disappointment. In fact many youngsters were ecstatic with joy at what they saw. You've got to be happy with what providence has given you free of charge. Sour grapes to those in a disappointing mood. You shouldn't have gone to this concert if you were not in the mood.

I am entitled to my opinion and i do not think that the line-up was great yesterday. No point saying i enjoyed it when I didn't. If you thought the line-up was full of top performers that you follow on a regular basis, then you're lucky. But dont judge me just cos i think previous years were better!
J Farrugia
Jul 1st 2010, 14:23
Dont judge me says Forrester. But yes you can judge others can you. the knive has two sides, if you judge this concert as diappointing others are judging the mood you were in when you decided to come to this concert. You should have stayed at home. At least, me too am entitled to MY opinion about your disappointment which you have shown publicly .

I'm not judging anyone's opinions or comments, i'm only stating that i was less than impressed with the isle of mtv, as were many other people. If you read well, i also said that scissor sisters and kid rock did perform well and gave a good show, but overall the acts failed to match previous years. Kelis was a joke, and guetta's stage time was bordering on ridiculous seeing that he was the only act a majority wer interested in.

what can I see to this one? Next time dont attend. Your place will be well taken care of. As they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. and even though I am not a fan of these groups and artists, I still appreciate their coming to our island to give us a free treat. What else do some people want? And it was free!
