While the government's decision to demolish the "oil depot building" in front of a section of the Vittoriosa bastions is commendable, the same cannot be said of the authorities responsible for the upkeep of the Vittoriosa waterfront.
Following a recent visit with foreign friends of mine, I noticed that the general maintenance of the place was being neglected. Walking along the waterfront, one notices plastic flower pots which are broken and the plants in them dead. They are an eyesore which give a very bad impression to visitors and yacht owners and should either be replaced or removed.
Many floodlights meant to illuminate the bastions and façades of the historical buildings are burnt thus leaving these architectural gems in darkness. As a result, their magnificence and beauty cannot be appreciated. When floodlit, these bastions and buildings are a beautiful sight and make one feel proud of this architectural heritage. This is simply a question of maintenance and upkeep which the management of the Vittoriosa Marina and the Vittoriosa local council should attend to. They should put their heads together and pool resources, if this is the problem, and attend to these matters for the benefit and enjoyment of the many Maltese and tourists who visit the waterfront daily.
