Quantity of used car oil found in Marsaxlokk dump
A quantity of used car oil kept in leaking drums was among rubbish found this morning when Resources Ministry workers started to remove some 25 tons of debris in the area of Fort St Paul at Xrobb l-Għagin, Marsaxlokk.
Resources Minister George Pullicino, who visited the site, said it was shameful that so much waste had been dumped in this scenic area, more so his ministry had set up a number of Civil Amenity Sites where all forms of waste could be disposed of.
The minister pointed out that the oil from the drums could leak down to the water table, with harmful consequences.
The workers this morning also found a large number of empty plastic jerrycans, mattresses, washing machines and bathroom tiles.
The removal of the dump is expected to take three weeks.
Mr Pullicino said this clean-up followed an initiative by Parliamentary Assistant Franco Debono. Dr Debono was also present on the site this morning.
The Public Cleansing Department in the first half of this year removed some 9,000 tons of waste from the streets. During the same period is handled 7,000 calls for the collection of bulky refuse. 50,000 tons of waste were collected at the Civic Amenity Sites.

Brace yourself people. With skips now costing 100 euro there is going to be lots more rubbish like this dumped all over the countryside. It is not logical that the government makes a show like this one to try to convince us that we are all for the environment and then at the same time raise the landfill fees forcing skip companies to raise their prices ! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot !

This country is filled with investigators ready to say the authorities what to do. But no one is ready to give a helping hand to clean the mess !

Some of us are really a disgrace to the nation. With all the bulky refuse service so handy, I think that this filth is generated on purpose

Used car oil it may very well contain, but why not used truck oil or used bus oil or used commercial vehicle oil or used fishing vessel oil (M'Xlokk!!! - HALLOWWWW) or used marine pleasure craft oil. Why not engine oil or is it conveniant to blame the 'car', scapegoat for all the environmental ills on the Island. The culpret at the end is the unprofessional Neandarthal who dumped the drums there in the first place. A serious technical investigation could locate the original source and the perpetrator fined and made to pay for the investigation AND another four like it for when the need arises! The evidence, as the video clip shows, is simply dumped away with all traces of the souce and the perpetrator being lost.

Nowhere in the article does it say there is a search for the culprits. It seems all the ministry can do is clean up after someone else's mess, and at the taxpayer's expense. How come that no action is taken against these irresponsible people. All those empty jerrycans and used oil surely could be traced to it's owner.

Mhux ovvju xoghol min hu dan? Min jiffrekwenta dawk l-inhawi? Ma tridx tmur l-universita biex tgharaf min huma l-hatja. Dawk li qatt ma hamlu lill-Maltin igawdu l-pajsagg nadif u sabieyh. Dawk li qatt ma hamlu ghasfur itir liberu.

Well done to those who organised this clean up operation and the removal of the very hazardous used engine oil. I sincerely hope that people stop dumping stuff around in the country side, once and for all. !!

Would it be too much to ask to put a few skips in certain localities, that way some of this illegal dumping might possibly be reduced.

Where it not for Pullicino some people would have this country turned into a mess.

U ħallina Karl,
anki fit-tindif hemm il-politika partiġġjana? Jiena xbajt nipparteċipa f'inizjattivi u anki norganizza clean-ups imma peress li nippartjeni mal-Partit Laburista, dak ma jgħoddx u ma għandhux jingħata tifħir għax ma jidhirx fuq il-gażżetti jew xi blogg. U mela tiġi tgħid li mn'Alla kien Pullicino bħallikieku Malta tiddependi fuqu biss. Meta se nimmaturaw fil-pajjiż?

Minister Pullicino said 'it was shameful that so much waste had been dumped in this scenic area'. I find this statement quite ironic coming from someone who was quite vociferous in the powerstation extention debates. This extension, as it is now proposed, will do more than harm this scenic area, it will RUIN it completely beyond repair.

dont be ridiculous dont show your true political colors. you are just spiteful of the good work This government is doing so that Malta will have enough power generation, and a good environment. Both can live side by side like in all other countries. Just sour grapes for the work this government has always done in favour of the good of the nation.

The dumped used oil is disgrace but at least can be contained with some difficulties- my fear is that it represents a tiny proportion of the amount that is actually poured into the drains by irresponsible mechanics and even individuals who opt to change their own car oil by themselves.

I would kindly ask the Hon Minister to visit the yacht Marina @ Gzira where some actually dumped used engine oil next to the recycle bins. It was obvious from where the oil originated consider the mess on the quay. This was witnessed yesterday evening.
It is a really disgrace and downright pathetic how certain people could be so downright irresponsible. .
