The Mediterranean Institute, in collaboration with the Unesco International Council for Traditional Music's 'Anthropology of Music in Mediterranean Cultures' study group, and the Maltese Ministry of Education, are organising and hosting two events focusing on Mediterranean music on the University campus.

There will be two workshops tomorrow and on Wednesday for Maltese music teachers, who will be introduced to 'Ethnomusicology and Mediterranean Soundscapes' by Philip Ciantar, from the University of Malta, and 'Applied Ethnomusicology in the Classroom' by Elita Maule, from the Conservatorio di Musica C. Monteverdi and Freie Universität of Bolzano.

From Thursday to Saturday, the study group will hold its eighth meeting in Malta, where international ethnomusicologists will come together to discuss how musical traditions have been and are frequently 'translated' and made meaningful in contexts alien to their origin. The theme for the meeting is 'Musical Translations Across the Mediterranean'.

The conference is being attended by scholars from the US, Japan, Australia and Europe and lecturers from the University of Malta.

Prof. Philip Bohlman from the University of Chicago will deliver the keynote address. Music educators who attend the workshops are invited to attend the meeting.
