Three immigrants were each jailed for six months after pleading guilty to using false documents and trying to escape from Malta.

Aboubakar Doumbia, 24, from the Ivory Coast, admitted using a false passport to leave Malta for Spain.

In a separate arraignment, Emmanuel Ebenizer, 22, from Nigeria, pleaded guilty to escaping to Zurich, Switzerland, where he was held after failing to produce travel documents and sent back to Malta.

In a third case, 19-year-old Mohamed Kigera from Gambia admitted escaping from Safi barracks and trying to flee the island.

The men were all jailed despite a plea from their lawyer for a suspended sentence.
