I read in The Sunday Times (June 20) that Parliament's Social Affairs Committee was to meet on Tuesday to discuss the transmission of football matches at the insistence of David Agius, the PN Whip.
This 'politician' continues to amaze me with his blatant and misplaced sense of justice. Melita Cable enjoyed a transmission monopoly for football matches transmission for years.
However, Mr Agius took no action. Why? Was the Go customer not a consumer then? What has changed now? Was the loser - in this case Melita Cable - beaten unfairly in a straight contest?
I for one have just signed a two-year contract with Go on the strength of the football transmissions from next season and discontinued my subscription to Melita Cable.
If Melita now wins us the right to transmit the matches, would I have the right to refuse to honour my contract with Go? Go had better hold tight to its hard-won right to transmit Italian League and British matches, as otherwise its subscribers would have been cheated. Would Mr Agius defend the consumers' right to cancel their contract with Go if this happens?
Go has made great strides compared with Melita, which has seen its subscribers desert it by the thousands. Melita Cable has always been an arrogant service provider and charged hefty rates for services - serves it right.
