Isn't ironic though, here we are trying to copy the UK and limit the influx of illegals, and yet our intelligent authorities have the audacity to charge them for trying to escape, i must be living on the wrong planet surely or am i dreaming. This just shows you although Malta is a great little island for the retired foreigners, its still not up to the migrant's liking as compare with thre rest of the eu members work and social wise, here on one hand we have the immigrants taking our jobs and on the other hand we have hundreds of applications from our own people wanting to settle in a host country away from our families, everything is haywired..The question is WHY?

Sweetie pie, they were not jailed because they tried to escape, they were jailed for using forged documents, which is a crime both for them and for anyone else.

I worked in Malta and payed taxes and I pay taxes in my country too, and i don't mind, Malta earns much more cause they get money for the immigrants, guess why is it so hard to let them go, there are much more things in Malta to complain about than immigrants, but you are a bit right, maybe the government should take the taxes for education, so this comments can't be made.

Its much better if the EU takes all the illegals (that no one wants, including your own government) than pay some miserly fee to compensate a small fraction of what each immigrant (illegal or so-called 'humanitarian') costs the Maltese sociaty - in economic as well as socio-cultural costs. The EU's miserly compensation is only an attempt to shut us up! If what you said is true, then all countries, including your own, would have been queueing up to sign the burden-sharing agreement!!!

viktoria gellert Malta earning money for illegal immigrants? Tell it to the marines viktoria. If a country earns money for illegal immigrants, why don't you take them to your own country to take the money viktoria? Or does your country neither wants the illegal immigrants nor the money which you say we are getting for them?

All these illegal immigrants should not be in Malta in the first place. They come to Malta as a stepping stone to go further north. But their place is in south, in their own countries in Africa. They should not even be put in prison. They should just be put on a charter flight and sent to their own countries.

what benefits do they get? the 81euros per month, IF they get it! And can you really live on this amount?? They work for their money, and they even pay taxes in Malta, which if they loose their jobs, they won't get any benefits back! They don't want to stay in Malta. And the government should do something to start issuing documents for them. At least giving them hope for a better life. Sending them back is very INHUMAN to say, you should get to know what's really happening in their countries and think what can happen to them if they are sent back or even to Libya. Get to their real situation, go to Hal Far, see how it feels like living in a tent or in a hangar, wet in winter and frustratingly hot in summer! Who are we really paying taxes for, not these people for sure, have a look around, observe and learn please.

Ritianne Ellul what have they paid to get benefits? Maltese citizens do not get any benefits if they had not previously paid into the system. The illegal immigrants come here illegally without any identification, get free lodging, water, electricity, telephone cards, internet etc all paid by US the MALTESE taxpayers. And what do we get? Criticism and murders http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20100626/local/migrant-charged-with-murder by illegal immigrants because we have no idea who they really are. And mind you this is not the first murder b illegal immigrants apart from rapes and attempted rapes. Have a look at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7856787/Violent-inner-city-crime-the-figures-and-a-question-of-race.html Violent inner-city crime, the figures, and a question of race and http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1289654/Iraqi-asylum-cheat-got-700-000-benefits-houses-private-school-son.html Iraqi asylum cheat who got £700,000 in benefits, three houses and private school for her son

Sean Grima what I need is none of your business. The illegal immigrants should not get any benefits but an expulsion order the moment they land in Malta.

you know very well that they are entitled to apply for asylum and hence cannot be deported before allowing them the chance to do so.

The issue here is criminality not race.
The police need to identify and deal with the source of these fake ID and travel documents, I expect these fake documents are part of 'the services' offered by the people traffickers, to the illegals.
We must also consider that if these fake ID documents improve in quality some illegals will slip through the net, and then we will have a situation where any criminal can get hold of fake documents and escape justice. We could even have untraceable terrorists with fake documents, roaming around from country to country organising bombings, bank robberies and kidnappings etc.
Sean Grima
Jun 27th 2010, 11:01
yeah, so we should not allow any immigrants to seek asylum, because of the highly unlikely possibility that one is a terrorist!

Sean Grima your African illegal immigrants have all of Africa where to claim asylum. How come they do not go to other African countries or to the oil rich Middle Eastern countries? Why not encourage them to go there sean? After all they should be better off in an oil rich country than the smallest overpopulated country in Europe and nearly in the world without any natural resources.

because unlike what you say, their main consideration is not getting more money but being able to live in a safe country where human rights are respected.

As long as the african people stay at Malta they are jailed anyway, let the africans go somewhere else where the people have a different attitude. To read the comments makes me sad.

No other EU country wants them. They will only be sent back to Malta when caught illegally in another EU country. This is thanks to the Dublin II which hold the country of first entry responsible for examining an illegal immigrant's request for asylum. So if illegal immigrants move to another country, they will be sent back to prevent "asylum shopping". And, BTW they are traced through their fingerprints which are shared by all EU countries.
Malta is therefore very much like the Hotel California where, "you can check in any time you like, but you can never leave."

Jun 27th 2010, 10:48
Viktoria Gellert if these comments makes you sad go to their own countries and work for them there because for the vast majority of Maltese citizens as shown many times in polls they are unwanted and unwelcome as much as leeches.

My government takes a lot of foreigners, the most of them after France, and there are some people complaining about, but still those people are just have to complain about anything and are not happy with themselves, this is ok to use poor countries but nobody wants to pay and in my country they are treatened completely different, much better
