The planning authority yesterday granted a full permit for the reclamation and extension of Terminal 2 at the Freeport to create more container storage space and allow larger vessels to berth.
Around 25,500 square metres of land will be reclaimed. The north quay will be extended by 208 metres and the west quay by 194 metres.
The project was discussed during a board meeting of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.
The previous outline permit decision had not been well received by the Birżebbuġa local council and an environment action group in the area, who had complained the project would increase noise and pollution to the detriment of residents.
In fact, monthly meetings are being held between the planning authority's environment protection directorate, the local council and the action group to discuss light pollution and noise reduction measures.
The planning authority yesterday postponed a decision on an application to demolish a soft drinks factory in Sta Venera and build 164 flats instead. The board asked the applicant to resubmit a number of amendments to a small part of the exterior design.
