Fireworks for Siggiewi feast to go ahead
Fireworks for the feast of St Nicholas in Siggiewi may continue to be let off from the current site, a court ruled this morning.
The decision followed a request by the owners of a number of farmhouses near Siggiewi who called on the court to issue a warrant of prohibitory injunction to stop the letting off of fireworks near their properties.
In a reply, fireworks enthusiasts said they had been letting off fireworks from the site well before neighbours moved in and the site respected current regulations.
The residents pleaded that the field from where the fireworks were let off was not sufficiently distant from a public road which was used regularly in terms of legal notice 243 issued in 1998 and subsequently amended.
Furthermore, the field was very close to the residences and next door to stables and a falconry, posing a danger to people, animals and properties.
The fireworks enthusiasts said they had been using the site to let off fireworks for more than 30 years without anyone objecting.
They had applied to the Commissioner of Police for a permit to let off fireworks and it had been issued in terms of existing regulations.
They also insisted that the safety distances laid down in the regulations were being respected.

Kienet haga rragunata li hekk ha tinqata din il-kawza peress li ghal paragun ta' kazi ohra relatati l-izviluppaturi resqu lejn l-inkonvenjent u 100% li kienu konxji tal-inkonvenjent. Ovjament li pruvaw jgibu skuza bit-triq ma nistax nimmagina li kieku kif il-pulizija johorgu l-permessi relatati. Tajjeb li issa l-awtoritajiet jiccekjaw dawn il-propjetajiet u l-uzu taghhom biex jaraw li huma konformi mal-permessi u l-licenzji. Ovjament kellna qaddis kbir San Nikola ukoll jghenna kontra dawn il-mercenarji li ghal skapitu tal-flus jaghmlu li jistghu biex jeqirdu l-kultura ta' pajjizhom. Viva San Nikola, viva l-magnus, viva s-Siggiewi u s-Siggiewin.
Ma taghmlu xejn mal-forza taghna.

Good. These people who are doing their utmost to kill traditions of our island by abusing the new EU regulations ought to be ashamed of themselves. They should have known about the letting off of the village festa fireworks and should have looked somewhere else to live, preferably somewhere abroad. It is bad enough that we are being strangled by European laws and regulations, most of which are slowly killing our identity. Our fathers and forefathers were able to live with traditions so why can`t this bunch of moaners do the same. If you don`t like it, you have the choice of other countries.

The owners of the farmhouses knew that every year the fireworks are let off in that area, and why are they complaining now when the feast is this same weekend, at least they could have complained well before the feast. Basically they tried to ruin the hard work that these fireworks enthusiasts took during this year to manufacture the fireworks.

Good. When i was young i always asked why ppl don't complain to farm smells near their homes near de la salle college, and his reply always was the following - Did you go to the nusiance or did the nusiance come to you? - This one is a case in point. Well done court.

The residents knew where they were going and its their fault for having moved there. They cannot expect that they should be able to stop anything that was previously held at the location they move to.

I agree with you - indeed, over the last 40 years the loud bangs have actually reduced considerably in frequency even though they unfortunately also seemed to have increased considerably in volume.
