Stock exchange: HSBC and BOV continue to decline

The share prices of HSBC Bank Malta and Bank of Valletta continued to decline this morning forcing the MSE Share Index to drop below the 3,400 mark for the first time since early December. The Index is now 1.8% below its value at the beginning of the year and 14% below its 2010 high of 3,956.286 recorded on 20 January 2010.

HSBC edged marginally lower to close at the €2.84 level on volumes of 6,600 shares with BOV’s equity slipping a further 0.9% to close at the €3.20 level – the lowest level since 11 January 2010.

Meanwhile Middlesea Insurance plc touched a new 2010 high of €1.05 before easing back to the €1.03 level, unchanged from the previous close. Almost 3,000 shares changed hands today with bids of a further 11,000 shares remaining unsatisfied at the €1.03 level.

On the bond market, the General Public offering of the Tumas Investments plc bond issue opens tomorrow. The 6% Simonds Farsons Cisk plc bonds maintained their high of 102.50% while the 6% Gasan Finance Company plc bonds dropped 100 basis points to par value.
