After Gordon Strachan left the Scottish scene, the honours stopped coming to Celtic Park. Tony Mowbray succeeded Strachan but under his guidance, Celtic struggled to keep up with the pace set by arch-rivals Rangers.

With eight league games remaining, Celtic sacked Mowbray and appointed Neil Lennon as caretaker manager until the end of the season. Under Lennon, Celtic's results in the league improved as they enjoyed a run of seven victories but they suffered a humiliating defeat to Ross County in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Former Celtic midfielder Lennon, now 38, has been confirmed as the Bhoys boss for this season with Stuart Baxter appointed assistant manager. Lennon's backroom staff consists of former team-mates Johan Mjallby, Alan Thompson and Garry Parker.

Lennon had been reserve team coach at Celtic Park before Mowbray's dismissal. As a player, Lennon was signed by Martin O'Neill in 2000 and the hard-working midfielder went on to win five Scottish titles in seven years.

In the Scottish Premier League, Celtic finished six points behind champions Rangers and failed to win any of the domestic cups.

Debt-ridden Rangers retained the league crown despite having no funds to sign new players. They had to offload 11 players during the season to reduce the wage bill. The club board confirmed manager Walter Smith for next season.

With Smith at the helm, Rangers also won the League Cup last season. Dundee United claimed the Scottish Cup with a 3-0 win over Ross County

In Europe, Celtic and Rangers joined the other Scottish representatives on the exit list before the start of 2010.

Celtic and Rangers will again play in the Champions League while Dundee United, Hibernian and Motherwell will compete in the Europa League.

Relegated Falkirk will be replaced by First Division champions Inverness Caledonian in the Scottish Premier League.
