The Social Affairs Committee in a meeting yesterday urged GO and Melita to try to reach a settlement which would enable viewers to have access to all important football matches without having to buy the two services.

In a two hour meeting also attended by representatives of the two companies, Nationalist MP David Agius, who moved the issue before the committee, spoke about the problems which viewers currently had and said the two service providers should be sharing services, as is done in some countries.

The Committee also called on the Copyright Board and the Consumer Protection Division to examine the issue, not least the issue of cartels.

The committee on Monday will consider what legislative proposals may be made if no agreement is reached between the companies.
