Power station precipitators off for six months because of flyash transport problems
Enemalta last year switched off precipitators which capture flyash emitted from the power station chimneys after a call for tenders for the contract to transport the flyash drew no interest and the storage facillity filled up, it has been explained in Parliament.
Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in reply to questions that in July 2008 Enemalta had received an order from Mepa to stop the contractor from transporting flyash. After talks with Mepa the transport of flyash was resumed on condition that a new tender was issued with Mepa-approved specifications. However, when the new call for tenders was made, no contractor showed any interest.
In December 2008 the contractor told the corporation that he no longer had a permit to transport flyash. As a result, when the corporation’s silos filled up with flyash the precipitators that produced it were switched off.
The transport of flyash was resumed after another tender was awarded in June 2009.

So , if in the future ,EneMalta will have the same problem with the waste of the BWSC power station , what is going to happen when there is going to be much more toxic waste ?

This is outrageous!! How can Enemalta expect to be trusted by the people with the management of the toxic waste of the 'new' power station?
Apparently peoples' health is not a priority niether for Enemalta nor for MEPA ( and nobody is held accountable (veru l- kaz tal- hmar iwahhal f'denbu)as if nothing wrong happened!! . What happened to the citizens' health an environmental safeguards ? Shame!

So it wasn't contaminated samples that prevented knowing where the black dust was coming from - it was a cover up all the time.
BTW: was that June 2009 tender the same one that used the ash in cement instead of shipping it out ? Did anyone ask for a refund.
Resignations (plural) please.

Mr Prime Minister, you have your answer where the black dust was coming from and as you were told by the vast majority of people from all ages and from all levels of education but who had a bit of common sense, but it seems that you either don't have any common sense st all or, as I believe, you were trying to fool the people as is the PNs trade mark.

So finally we know where from and why we had black dust all over our homes in Paola; Fgura; Tarxien; Marsa; etc. Not that we didn't know but the authorities have been denying it all along. How's that for transparency?

So that is where the 'mysterious' black dust must have come from. So during those six months people were unknowingly inhaling harmful substances. What is going on in this tiny island? No one seems to be responsible for nothing! Shame on the government!! Now if this is not a political scandal, I don't what is! We're talking about public health here.

Am I right in assuming that, without these precipitators running, these toxic compounds were simply released into the environment for us to breathe in?

And where was the contractor transporting the flyash to?
Better remove the damned flyash dirty pollutant and hazardous substance from Benghajsa. I beleive the Cliffs at Tal-Mara are a conservation area. DISGUSTING Where is MEPA??? regarding this. And what about the latley mentioned RADIOCTIVITY from the fly ash? Can somebody competent comment pls?

Nice, very nice. When the silos are full just blow the hazardous dust into our kids' lungs and make it disappear. Disgusting!
And the country is on a wild goose chase to establish the source of the black dust when the parties who are supposed to carry out the investigations (MEPA, Enemalta) know exactly what's happening.
Is this a country trying to achieve excellence?
