Conservation, restoration programmes

The University and Heritage Malta have for several years been collaborating to offer a Bachelor degree course in Conservation in four areas of conservation and restoration, as well as two Master courses.

It has now been agreed that Heritage Malta's Institute of Conservation and Management of Cultural Heritage (ICMCH) will offer vocational and outreach programmes for schoolchildren and the public, while the University will offer tertiary courses.

Both the University and Heritage Malta will continue to support students currently at ICMCH until they complete their course. These students have already been attending lectures for certain study units with students in other courses at the University's Msida campus.

As from October, students on the Bachelor in Conservation and Restoration Studies (Hons) course will be registered with the University's Faculty for the Built Environment.

The University will provide the resources necessary to run these courses, with the collaboration of Heritage Malta, whose laboratory facilities and library will continue to be made available to the students.

Over the next two years the faculty will work on developing Master courses in conservation to be offered as from October 2012.

These courses will be open to graduates holding Bachelor degrees in relevant subjects, such as archaeology, history of art, science, architecture, engineering and conservation.
