Before the 20th century, the piano was not generally used as an orchestral instrument. However, since its invention and development in the 18th century, composers have written concertos for piano and orchestra.
With the advent of the so-called 'classical era', the piano concerto came of age in the masterpieces written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Mozart's body of masterly works in this genre paved the way for the great concertos of the romantic era.
The grand piano was launched during a special concert at the Robert Samut Hall in Floriana on June 10, where MPO resident conductor Michael Laus featured as soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto in A, K. 488. This work was coupled with the Divertimento in D, K. 251, also by Mozart.
BoV marketing manager Charles Azzopardi and MPO chairman and managing director James Scerri Worley attended one of the orchestra's rehearsals for the concert.
