The Tommy Hilfiger tournament was introduced to the Royal Malta Golf calendar last year. The competition is played over three days with Thursday reserved for the women, Saturday for men and a mixed day on Sunday combining the top 20 women and 60 men.
The format is medal for both days thus enhancing the likelihood that 'real golfers' will win the prize of a trip to Simon's Golf Club in Copenhagen, to participate in a Tommy Hilfiger event for which pro-golfer Nick Dougherty will also be present.
Four golfers are allocated to go, the winners and runners-up.
There were some outstanding scores after day one of the men's competition. Quint van Beek was lying first with a score of 63, followed by fellow junior Danny Holland with 66 and Kim Borg, Ian Restall and Ken Micallef all on 67.
Margaret MacDermott was leading the women's competition at the end of day one with a 67. She was followed by Maria Woodward (70), Joanne Cassar (71), Lillian Field (71) and Debbie Holland (72).
On the Sunday a couple of men came from behind, notably Francis Busuttil (63) and Geoff Pickles (63). But young Van Beek kept his cool again and scored an excellent 66. Over the two days he finished with 129 followed by Busuttil (133) and Pickles (134).
The women's competition was just as exciting. Holland managed an outstanding 66 followed by Woodward and Cassar, both with 67. In the final analysis Woodward won with an aggregate score of 141 followed by Holland and Cassar, both on 142.
Jonathan Shaw, director at Tommy Hilfiger (Malta), presented prizes to the winners. Special awards went to Paul Grey and Manuela Roth, for the longest drive, and to Joe Sullivan and Joanne Cassar, for nearest the pin.
