Twenty-five people died from a drug overdose in the past three years, Social Policy Minister Dolores Cristina said this afternoon.

Speaking during the inauguration of a new detox centre at the Sedqa premises in Hal Farrug, she said this figure was shocking and should lead to the provision of more services.

Sina Bugeja, the CEO of the Foundation for Social and Welfare Services, said the facility would not only be used by Sedqa clients but by anyone who needed to get detoxed.

It was the first step in the rehabilitation process and could host up to nine people at any one time for an average stay of a week.

Its first clients were moving in tomorrow.

Ms Cristina said it was always very sad to hear about problems of drug abuse because these were not only limited to the user but also to the family and the community.
