Blue flag for Bugibba beach
Video: Paul Spiteri Lucas
The blue flag was today raised on the Bugibba perched beach, which is situated opposite the Dolmen Hotel.
The flag, a sign of quality showing that the beach has good quality water, facilities and management, was raised by the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Mario de Marco.
The Bugibba perched beach is Malta’s second blue flag beach following that of St George’s Bay which was awarded the flag last year.
Another three beaches - Ramla in Gozo, Ghadira and Golden Sands were recognised high quality beached, which was just a step away from the blue flag award.
Dr de Marco said that one had to get away from the misconception that only sandy beaches could be blue flag. There were rocky beaches in Malta which should be worked upon to get the blue flag label.

this is a joke of a beach ..most fake beach i seen in the world it would have looked much better if they made it a lido with sunbeds like the old and once famous lido San Gorg ... Tal Qoni ...that was a great place to swim socilaize and mingle and enjoy the scenes ..blue flag what a political joke ....spend the money on NATURAL BEACHES and the only thing i do agree is that "ROCKY BEACHES " are included and that is a good thing as places like Font ghadir will get benefits from this ....

May be before commenting, some people should understand more about what the Blue Flag award is about. It is a very strict eco-label award managed by the Foundation for environmental Education (FEE). More information is available on www.blueflag.org.
As regards the stones at ramla - these will not hinder it from obtaining the Blue Flag (actually their removal could!) and likewise, Pretty Bay is not a complete write-off - with some active management this beach too could achieve a high standard as can others around the island.

Great job, i would like too see more of these, and i want to see blue lagoon to achieve this status, and it can only be achieved by removing all the boats that poison the beautiful waters!

It is a positive move so stop your BLA BLA BLA , if they got the blue flag then they deserve it. Nice work Dr De marco , A little imagination, good will, and a sense of responsibility towards our environment is always in our nations interest .

Well-done, Congratulations, after 40 years of Tourism Industry we managed to get a Blue Flag for two un-natural beaches lest than half a kilometer between them. Yet the older Natural beaches that existed since who knows when, and have frequented by don't know how many millions, are still in the waiting. Hope it won't be long for the others to get a Blue Flag status, even a Pale Blue will do, before the Tourism Industry runs dry. ‘Keeping up Appearance’.

I wish a Blue flag would go to Ramla but alas there are too many pebbles and stones which are hindering this NATURAL beach from acquiring this award apart from other issues.
I wrote 'NATURAL' in caps lock to stress that, in my humble opinion, both the tinest on the island 'Bugibba beach' and small St. Georges bay have been removed from status 'natural' and converted to 'artificial'.
